Step 3: Patient’s DNA Swabs / FTA Card

If oral assault occurred, collect oral swabs for foreign DNA first (see previous step).

Patient’s known DNA buccal swabs or an FTA® card should be obtained from every patient.

  1. Put on new gloves
  2. Using two swabs, swab the inner cheeks of the patient’s mouth
  3. Place the two swabs into a swab box
  4. Close both ends of the box
  5. Label the box
  6. Place labeled box in the known DNA envelope
  7. Label and seal the envelope with the examiner’s initials
  8. Place envelope in the SAEK

For more information on collecting buccal swabs see the Protocol.
